Medial EarlySign’s implementation at Maccabi Health Services, one of Israel’s leading integrated delivery networks, has been included in a new book by Springer Publishing, Timely Diagnosis of Colorectal Cancer.
Chapter 22, titled Enhancing Earlier Diagnosis of Colorectal Cancer by Algorithmic Analysis of Trends in Complete Blood Counts, describes the evolution of a novel method for the detection of colorectal cancer, by analysis of changes in complete blood counts. In subjects who have not undergone screening with FOBT or colonoscopy, the authors document the ability to utilize a novel algorithm which calculates the risk of colorectal cancer from routine complete blood counts measurements, long before anemia is apparent. The results show values of sensitivity and specificity equivalent to, and even superior to the routine use of occult blood tests. This has created a unique opportunity to find subsets of individuals who are at high risk for harboring colorectal cancer. This could lead to earlier diagnoses of colorectal cancer cases, at times before symptoms have emerged, when the disease is more likely to be curable.
